Practice Tests by Type
General Knowledge
The General Knowledge test is required for all CDL applicants. It covers basic commercial driving skills, vehicle inspection, safety procedures, and federal regulations. This is the foundation test that all CDL drivers must pass.
Air Brakes Knowledge Test
The Air Brakes knowledge test is required for commercial vehicles equipped with air brake systems. Passing this test demonstrates your knowledge of air brake operation, inspection procedures, and safety protocols, and removes the 'L' restriction from your CDL.
Combination Vehicles
The Combination Vehicles test is required to obtain a Class A CDL, which allows you to drive truck-trailer combinations where the trailer weighs more than 10,000 pounds. This test covers the skills and knowledge needed to safely operate tractor-trailers and other combination vehicles.
Hazardous Materials
The HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials) endorsement allows you to transport dangerous goods that could pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment. This includes chemicals, explosives, flammable liquids, and other regulated materials.
Passenger Vehicles
The Passenger endorsement is required to operate vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver). This includes city buses, tour buses, and other passenger transportation vehicles.
School Bus
The School Bus endorsement is required to operate school buses transporting students. This endorsement requires additional background checks and specialized training in student safety and evacuation procedures.
Tanker Vehicles
The Tanker endorsement is required for vehicles transporting liquid cargo in tanks of 1,000 gallons or more. This endorsement covers the unique challenges of liquid surge and weight distribution.
Doubles and Triples
The Doubles/Triples endorsement is required to operate commercial vehicles pulling two or three trailers. This endorsement covers coupling procedures, inspection techniques, and the unique handling characteristics of multiple trailers.
Pre-trip Inspection
Pre-trip inspection is a hands-on practical skills demonstration required for all commercial drivers. This is an oral examination where you must verbally explain and physically demonstrate proper vehicle inspection procedures to the examiner during your CDL skills test. Basic knowledge is covered in the General Knowledge written exam, but the actual inspection skills are demonstrated practically.
